Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, born in Long Beach California. DuVernay was instilled with the desire to explore her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise at the age of a small child. Her aunt was a registered nurse who was a night shift worker so that she could dedicate her time to writing, reading theatre, and various other pursuits. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was trained by her mother to understand that art could serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay was raised by parents who were socially aware and showed her how to utilize the arts to find a way to express her feelings. Although DuVernay spent her childhood in Compton with her parents, she lived at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights protest through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers that she spent in the state to stimulate her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she obtained certificates in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was in her school. Her internship was with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was assigned to observe the house of one member of the jury and take a look at their trash. The jury member was unhappy with her journalism duties, and decided that she would switch to the public relations industry. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist at a small production studio right following her college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. The company also launched a variety of promotion and lifestyle networks for the urban beauty industry, including her own Urban Beauty Collective.
